There were some good shows, like No Ordinary Family, that unfortunately didn’t make the cut to come back for another season. But the good news is that for all the shows that were cancelled, there are some good new shows coming next television season. Here are a few of them.

Terra Nova

Terra Nova is the story of a family that flees a future where the Earth is overdeveloped and overcrowded to the prehistoric past. They’re part of a mission to save the human race…by starting over in the past. But of course, this isn’t going to be easy. Danger await them in many forms, including dinosaurs! Terra Nova is going to air on Fox. Also from the looks of the trailer, it seems like it could be a little like LOST at points. But here’s hoping that it turns out to be different. Here’s the longest trailer released to date:

<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRY-ZmgvJqxQf770tPsZ0lqMh6CEczT5bIOUCgfoLRWOwl6shMUSAoevoSsy8vYPMNR6PjzQQJrsJGrY7KzK-NEf6JfHBjUX0RjjcDvB4BttrRxqzy8pFf1xsajNmHhPRPEJ0wd8DQAXFQ/?imgmax=800" style="border-style: none" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('03571461-9b86-410a-9c30-fa85bc728845'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = "

";" alt="">

Touch

The story behind Touch is a little hard to describe. It is a preternatural drama with the hopeful premise that we’re all interconnected. It follows the stories of several different and unrelated characters that seem to affect each other in ways seen and unseen. And in the center of it all is a single father named Martin Bohm and his severely autistic 10-year-old-son, Jake. Touch will follow as Martin attempts to communicate with his son, realizing some very important things along the way. There’s no trailer yet, but as soon as one is released, it will be added.

Once Upon A Time

Also hard to describe, I will take the following description directly from ABC.

Emma Swan knows how to take care of herself. She's a 28-year-old bail bonds collector who's been on her own ever since she was abandoned as a baby. But when the son she gave up years ago finds her, everything starts to change. Henry is now 10 years old and in desperate need of Emma's help. He believes that Emma actually comes from an alternate world and is Snow White and Prince Charming's missing daughter. According to his book of fairytales, they sent her away to protect her from the Evil Queen's curse, which trapped the fairytale world forever, frozen in time, and brought them into our modern world. Of course Emma doesn't believe a word, but when she brings Henry back to Storybrooke, she finds herself drawn to this unusual boy and his strange New England town. Concerned for Henry, she decides to stay for a while, but she soon suspects that Storybrooke is more than it seems. It's a place where magic has been forgotten, but is still powerfully close... where fairytale characters are alive, even though they don't remember who they once were. The epic battle for the future of all worlds is beginning, but for good to win, Emma will have to accept her destiny and fight like hell.

Seems like a pretty interesting idea. Oh, and did I mention that Robert Carlyle, who played Nicholas Rush from Stargate Universe will be staring as well. If the idea alone isn’t enough reason to watch, the amazing acting of Robert Carlyle should push it over the hump. Here’s the ABC released trailer and a scene from the show as well.

<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3M_9KiVzN35h-IT1QRIWd-LJrCEkIO9bP8ArfjBUGp8vGLQJsE2WWrmVLsjfD0qBT59fY3x3qlles5HRyZ2efD4CdIW1FawjN7Pq9t53d336Nkv3DYfQYARWJlzhBSA2kVHCp97Y9JQih/?imgmax=800" style="border-style: none" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('97af69f8-c3e8-4646-ae08-17eb109a9097'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = "

";" alt="">

There are several more new Science Fiction and Fantasy shows that were picked up for next television season. It premiered in January of 2008 and ran for two seasons, until April, 2009. It’s based on the Terminator movie series and follows the lives of Sarah and John Connor after the end of Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Like Terminator 2, the main premise of the show is a reprogrammed Terminator who has been sent back to protect John Connor. But while that is the main idea, it is not the sole story arc of the show.

Warning – Between the “=====” markers, there is a brief backstory on the show. It contains slight spoilers about the pilot. Don't read if you haven't watched and prefer to go in to the show without any information.

==============================================================

Following Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Skynet sends another Terminator, a T-888, back to 1999 in another attempt to eliminate John Connor. It's revealed that destroying the T-1000 and T-800 in T2 didn't stop Judgment Day, just delayed it. It is also revealed that Sarah also dies from cancer in the time before Judgment Day. The Resistance reprogram another Terminator, known as Cameron (Summer Glau), and send her back to protect him. To protect him and his mother, she jumps them forward to 2007, skipping the year when Sarah was supposed to die of cancer. However, the threat of attack from the future is a constant threat, meaning they have to be constantly vigilant.

As they are on the run, they are also trying to prevent Skynet from being built. During the course of the show, Sarah, John, and Cameron under take several missions to find the first starting point of Skynet and prevent it from being built and to stop Judgment Day.

==============================================================

A little more background on the show: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles only ran for 2 seasons. The first season slated to be 13 episodes but was cut to 9 because of 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike. When it returned for season 2, it was also originally slated for 13 episodes, but Fox upped the order to a full season of 22 after the first few episodes ran. It was unfortunately cancelled after its second season.
If you looking for a pretty good science fiction show to start watching, give Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles a try. It will be worth your while.
Kai_Strifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02832710883421340687noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-988241928666531285.post-89415842595371255742011-05-20T09:31:00.001-07:002011-05-20T09:31:18.994-07:00New Stargate Fan Video: Blow Me Away
As I’m sure you’ve guessed, the writers here at Flights of Fantasy love Stargate just a little bit (hard to believe, right? :-D) Well, I log onto YouTube today, and see there on the homepage a brand-new Stargate fan music video. Made by JaapVSWDelta, who has made a few other videos as well (I’ll post a few of these as well), he’s taken scenes from all three Stargate series’ and combined them into one amazing video set to Blow Me Away by Breaking Benjamin. Here it is, for your viewing pleasure!

And as promised, a few addition videos from JaapVSWDelta!

Kai_Strifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02832710883421340687noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-988241928666531285.post-10329043053209824812011-05-09T22:41:00.001-07:002011-05-09T22:41:27.798-07:00Stargate Universe-Episode 220 “Gauntlet” (Quick Review)
Review

This is a bittersweet review. May 9th, at 9 PM EDT, Stargate Universe officially ended its television run with the showing of the series finale, “Gauntlet”. It definitely will bring up some mixed emotions, and I will explain why in a minute.

As shown in the trailer, the main premise of this episode is the fact that the drones have learned about Destiny and how it operates. So, knowing that they need the Stargates to survive, the drones have posted command ships at every Stargate in Destiny’s path, at least until the edge of her sensor range. The crew has only one option, and it’s a long shot. The question is, are they willing to take it?

For ending on an incomplete note, I have to say, the writers did a great job. I will give one tidbit of information that is not a spoiler in any way, shape or form. If you were worrying that the ending would be a cliffhanger of the magnitude of last season, you can stop. While it is a cliffhanger of sorts, it actually is a decent stopping point for the series, easily allowing possible continuation later. Overall, it was a great episode to end a great series.

A lot of the character development we’ve seen throughout the season is coming to a head in this episode. I won’t reveal too much, but there are a lot of minor character storylines that I wish could be resolved. It leaves kind of a sour taste in my mouth, knowing that the show now has so much potential and will never have the ability to play that potential out to its fullest. But, it’s like they say, “The good die young.” So it seems it is with SGU, because this was a good show. No, this was a great show that grew into the show it was always meant to be, just as it was given the axe.

So if you missed it, buy it and watch it. If you’re in the UK or Australia, watch it when it airs, you’re in for a treat. And if you can’t afford to buy the episode, watch it online in a legal fashion. Lastly, if you’re on Twitter, make sure to tweet your thanks to the cast and crew for this amazing show. Till next time, readers.

<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtTic28qv7HCN9B8wSVnjrWwBkkOHBYhfE-3CreE55nLveqLnKxGXe5hfvcC6BJokuNlE5294rKzE9HFg5wd5v0lLWaI69qEK1oxDb80-yLka-sDr1b_j_nIMq9rvK4Zi-7I2_XHjcID0p/?imgmax=800" style="border-style: none" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('6fa35ae0-790e-4ae3-b41e-9f5ddaa458e9'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = "

";" alt="">

<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMpa_-25lIkGkmWBRRvzO7g5zWDJGoJ-ZP5HhPns09bEUCeGYgGioU4j26aBVg3I6CMdV2v-Nuho2nqPKjBXSA-hNweFE88SB996-J-sPh8af-edrGs-EcBiZpKg7wDzzgCsBDiDYkwy6g/?imgmax=800" style="border-style: none" galleryimg="no" onload="var downlevelDiv = document.getElementById('141a182b-78ac-427a-9e0f-2f61c95ad2d4'); downlevelDiv.innerHTML = "

";" alt="">

Kai_Strifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02832710883421340687noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-988241928666531285.post-65344923335207417872011-05-04T23:19:00.001-07:002011-05-04T23:19:10.595-07:00Stargate Universe-Episode 219 “Blockade” (Quick Review)
Review

In Blockade, the drones are continuing to present problems for the crew of Destiny, having discovered Destiny’s one huge weakness. This is another episode that will leave you on the edge of your seat the entire time, especially once stuff starts getting majorly intense. There are a few characters you’ll be worrying about during the episode, which keeps it interesting.

This episode begins with Destiny performing an aero-braking maneuver around a gas giant to reach the sun, similar to the episode “Darkness” from Season 1. She comes around the planet, and the bridge crew immediately detects drones and a command ship between them and the star. Destiny manages to jump away before any major damage is inflicted. They come to find out the drones are predicting Destiny’s course, and they must quickly find a way to recharge, before the ship’s batteries run dry.

There were several really good character development points in this episode. Eli is finally coming into his role as “Math Boy” in this episode, and there is also some interesting development with Volker’s confidence as well. He could possibly be realizing his critical flaw, and might eventually begin to change it.

If you happened to miss “Blockade”, you can watch it on SyFyDaedalus’s YouTube Channel. It’s in three parts, but is great quality. If you want to wait for Hulu or SyFy Rewind, the episode won’t be available until 5/10.
Kai_Strifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02832710883421340687noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-988241928666531285.post-85381804296220073642011-04-26T21:13:00.000-07:002011-04-26T21:13:02.700-07:00Stargate Universe-Episode 218 “Epilogue” (Quick Review)

Review

"Epilogue" was the second half of the last episode, "Common Descent". It's not a fast-passed episode, but it is an emotionally draining one. From happy to sad, it covers all the emotions. I will say this, if you cry easily, be prepared to cry for this one, because there are a few major kickers that no one has seen coming at all.

The basic story of the episode starts after the team disembarks from the shuttle. They head down into a bunker that was built by the people of Novis. Inside, they find a massive archive containing the entire history of the planet from the time that the alternate crew of Destiny had come through the gate inside the star. Throughout the episode, they are racing to download the database before extreme seismic activity brings the entire place down around them.

There were a few really good performances in this episode. First, Volker is really coming into his own at this point. There's one scene in particular where he stands up to Rush, a huge step for him. Also, there's Eli, who is continuing to get more and more confident in himself. The information that they find in the database gives him a huge confidence boost, making me think that he will play an even bigger role in a lot of scientific problem-solving later. Last, but definitely not least were TJ and Young. It seems that they have a shot at working everything out after all.

OVERVIEW:

The weeks following SG-1's intense adventure keep the SGC busy as wave after wave of their new found enemy attempt to penetrate the Stargate's shield. Little does the team know, but someone has already gotten through.

REVIEW:
Personally I liked Enemy Withing, I thought that for beginning Stargate is was a good episode showing how the Gou'ld can infiltrate almost anywhere, no matter how many weapns you point at the Stargate, and also gave more light to how when it is required, Teal'c will do anything necissary to protect the one people who actually showed him trust and support. This reappears several more times throughout the series.

It was a little annoying that the infiltrator turned out to be Kawalski but only because he (Other than Daniel and Jack) was the last Alumni character from the original movie.

All in all, this episode is just another reason why Stargate SG-1 is a really great piece of work, from the writers room, to the actors. When it comes to O'Neill's humor or the serious but caring Teal'c everyone keeps the fun going and suspsense up.
Ben Reedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18043221319557948481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-988241928666531285.post-89626405083137019302011-03-21T16:40:00.000-07:002011-03-21T16:40:32.931-07:00Blog Update 10
Hey everyone!

Episode Synopsis (From GateWorld):
Stranded on the Ancient vessel Destiny, the evacuees from Icarus Base discover that a worn-out life-support system and hull breaches will suffocate them in a matter of hours.
Episode Summary:
Scott enters the Gate Room and tells everyone they’re going to go and search the ship. Scott takes Lt. James with him, trying to play off the fact that they were having a “relationship” on Icarus Base. Before they leave, Scott asks the Senator to stay back and try to keep everyone calm. The teams leave, and Rush leaves right after, grabbing a bag and taking it with him. T.J. watches him leave, suspicious.
Rush goes to a private room and closes the door behind him. He take out the device that Col. Young made sure to grab while leaving the base. He places a stone on the pad, and switches bodies with a person on duty back on Earth. Back on the ship, the teams are looking around for any threats or anomalies. Scott’s team encounters a door that seems to be locked. When Eli opens it for them, the see a giant greenhouse-type dome with a hole in it. The ship’s shield prevents explosive decompression, but the atmosphere begins to rush out. Eli closes the door quickly, and they decide not to try opening locked doors again. Dr. Rush walks into the control room suddenly and asks everyone to meet him in the Gate Room. He explains that the case he had taken contains Ancient communication stones, which will allow them to communicate with Earth. He also says that General O’Neill has put him in command, which no one accepts. Rush tries to establish control, but when the civilians begin to rebel, Scott takes command, telling the military personnel that Col. Young put him in charge, and asks everyone to head to the quarters that had been found.
A little while later, a group of civilian and military personnel are going through the supplies that were brought from Earth. Everyone is bantering back and forth, when Greer notices that the representative from the IOA is staring at him. When she mentions that he was locked up before they left Icarus, he goes off on her, and Riley has to restrain him. He gets called to check for any compartments open to space that need to be closed, and we see a Sergeant grab some protein bars and stuff them in his pocket.
Rush is directing Scott to an elevator. Scott steps inside, turns around, and sees something floating down the corridor. Following, he runs into Eli, and finds out that the ball is actually a floating camera manufactured by the ship. Eli calls it a “Kino”. Meanwhile, Col. Young finally wakes up, but he’s not in the best condition. He can’t move his legs. T.J. hopes it’s just temporary, but they have no way to know for sure without a little time.
Young sends T.J. to get Rush. Back in the control room, Scott and Eli are explaining the Kinos that Eli has found to Rush. He tells them that things are worse than they thought. He sends Scott and Eli to the Gate Room to check on the CO2 Heading to the Gate Room, they open up the scrubber and see it’s full of black goop. The scrubbers are shot, and CO2 is going to build up in the ship to lethal levels. They throw around some ideas on how to replace the scrubbing compound, but they don’t have anything to replace it.
Meanwhile, teams are still searching for breached sections that are not sealed. Greer’s team comes across a shuttle. The front windows are breached, and the outer airlock door mechanism is damaged, preventing it from closing. Rush tries to close the inner shuttle door, but it must be closed from the inside, meaning whoever closes it will die. T.J. explains the situation to Young, at the same time that Chloe explains it to her dad. Unless they get the door closed, they have just over an hour till they run out of air. Rush finally states the obvious, someone will have to sacrifice themselves to shut the door. Knowing that they probably won’t get any volunteers, Rush goes over the list of people on the ship. Scott and Chloe both say that you can’t ask someone to go and die, and Rush counters with the fact that unless someone does close the door, everyone is going to die.
Everyone is throwing around options when Col. Young says that he will close the door. While they try to convince him not to, Chloe bursts in the room asking if anyone has seen her father. It turns out Chloe told him what’s going on. Scott calls to Greer, warning him that the Senator may be on the way. He’s already there, and he has a gun. When Franklin can’t close the door from the outside, Senator Armstrong enters the shuttle and closes the door.
Chloe reaches the door just as it closes, and has to watch her father die. She runs back to the control room. Torn up about the death of her father, she attacks Rush, blaming him. Rush is apologetic, saying that her father has given the rest of them the chance to survive.
Young asks the IOA representative, Camille, to inform the people that Senator Armstrong is dead, but gave them time to hopefully find a solution. At the same time, Scott talks to Chloe, comforting her about her father’s death. Eli is also grieving, and Rush shares some information with him to help him. Rush has discovered that they name of the ship they are on is called Destiny. The Ancients has launched it thousands of years ago, planning to board it using the Stargate. However, they ascended before they did, leaving the ship to fly on unmanned.
A little while later, SSgt Riley finds an 8-symbol address in the dialing computer, along with a reference to Earth. Even though they don’t have a point of origin, he says that they only have 36 possible symbols to try and Young gives him the go-ahead to dial. An alarm sounds, alerting Rush to the dialing. He hurries to stop them, telling them that the ship “simply doesn’t have the capability to dial Earth.” In the middle of his explanation, Destiny drops out of FTL. Rush believes that he has managed to tell the ship their problem, and that the gate should begin dialing to a planet with the resources they need.
The gate does begin dialing and when the wormhole establishes, they send a Kino through to see what’s on the other side. When they find out the planet is habitable, Young decides to send a team through to look for anything that can be used to scrub CO2. They also notice that there is a countdown running, with just over 12 hours till it runs out. Rush believes at that time, the ship will jump back into FTL, leaving whoever is on the planet behind. Rush and Young choose Franklin, Palmer, a Marine escort, and Eli also volunteers to go. They all gear up, and head through the gate. Rush stops at the event horizon and looks back at Young one last time. Young nods to him, and Rush steps through the gate.
Episode Review:
The second part of “Air” is where the character’s different idiosyncrasies really start to come out. For instance, we see that Rush is a naturally, controlling and manipulative person, and that Lt. Scott, while an officer, is still slightly new to being fully in command, and is just learning his command style. It’s abundantly clear that this iteration of Stargate is going to be more character-based than the previous two series were.

The acting is also starting to get better from the first episode, though, as in any new show, there are a few strangely delivered lines as actors find their character. For instance, when Lt. Scott is addressing a young Airman, the Airman says, “I work in the mess. Well, I did.” In my opinion, the line was well written, but he delivered the second part of it just a little to fast, so it didn’t quite sound right. But overall, the acting was great, and can only get better as the cast get to know each other better.

All in all, this was a great premiere episode for SGU. The right amount of action, character development and suspense to get you hooked and make you want to come back for more next week. The one stipulation is that you have to suspend your thoughts of what Stargate should be and just watch the show with a fresh mind. The fans that watched it expecting it to be exactly like SG-1 and Atlantis were disappointed because they were expecting the same standard fare. The writers mixed it up this time, and I think they did a great job. Kudos to the writers, and here’s to the start of a great series!
Episode Summary:
A single ship comes out of FTL, drifting in the vastness of space. The camera pans over it, giving us a view of a ship.
It zooms into the corridors of the ships, where we see the lights coming on, and we get a view of the Stargate dialing. The signature kawoosh signals a successful connection, and someone flies out of the gate at high speed.
He looks around for a second, trying to get his bearings, and suddenly a box and a woman come flying out of the event horizon. Within seconds, people are flying out of the gate, and Lt. Scott tries to get the to the side. He calls for them to slow down the evacuation, but gets no response.
Dr. Rush comes through the gate, and picks himself off the deck, slightly disoriented. He heads over to a console, looking it over for a second. Eli Wallace hits the deck and picks himself up, shaken up by the trip. He turns around and gets hit by a box. Meanwhile, Rush tries to activate the console but gets no response. Lt. Scott sees MSgt Greer come through and asks where Col. Young is. Greer says Young was right behind him, just as Col. Young is launched from the event horizon.
When the gate shuts down, the lights go out and the civilians panic. Using a flashlight, they find Col. Young. Right before he passes out, the tells Scott he’s in charge. Scott calls for Lt. Tamara Johansen, the medic, when he realized how badly Young is hurt. Scott first questions Eli on their location, then heads to find Rush when he realizes Eli doesn’t know. While they’re talking, a weird spectrum shift occurs and the engines power up.
While they wonder what the shift was, Eli has a flashback to a few days before. He’s playing an online game, called Prometheus, trying to destroy an orbiting ship. He enters the equation to channel the correct amount of power from the planet core into the weapon…and the game kicks him to the beginning of the level. Disheartened, he logs off for the night. The next morning, there’s a knock at his door. He opens it to find General O’Neill standing in front of him. Dr. Rush walks up and explains that he has solved a millennia old math problem in another language. They present him with a non-disclosure agreement and want him to come with them. Not wanting to sign the form, he “takes it under advisement”, and walks inside. As he goes up the stairs, there is a white flash, and then he’s standing in an observation lounge overlooking Earth. Rush walks up behind and welcomes him aboard the Hammond. He’s told that he’s going to be going to another planet. As part of his agreement, his mother’s sickness will be taken care of. Eli agrees to sign, but in typical Eli fashion, makes a joke, asking for some pants as well. Later, after a lot of training videos, he heads to the mess to get some food. He sees a girl sitting alone, and decides to sit and talk to her. He finds out that her name is Chloe, and she is the aide to Senator Armstrong. But it seems that she knows a lot about him before he even says anything.
The flashback ends, and Scott and Eli find the Observation Deck, with Rush staring out into space. Rush comments on the fact that the ship is traveling faster-than-light (FTL), but not through hyperspace. He also comments on the fact that the ship is definitely of Ancient design, most likely launched hundreds of thousands of years before. While they’re speaking, on the air-vents in the Gate Room shuts down. Rush realizes the life support is shutting down, commenting they might want to fix that.
They flashback to Icarus Base, where the Hammond has just come out of hyperspace. They beam down to the planet, where Eli is thoroughly stunned. The Senator introduces himself to Col. Young, and also introduced Chloe, who it turns out is his daughter. Inside the base, Eli looks at the Stargate with awe. After a little talking, they do a test dial, wanting to make a connection and send a probe through. They lock the first 8 chevrons, but even with the power equation, they can’t lock the last chevron. After almost overloading the system, they shut it down. A frustrated Rush leaves, saying that they need to run through Eli’s equations again. Eli is annoyed that Rush is passing the blame for the failure to him. Before Eli follow’s Rush, he turns to the group saying “Not my fault…”
Back on the ship, the civilians are getting restless. Lt. Scott comes in and explains where they are. Senator Armstrong demands that they us the gate and dial back to Earth right then. He seems to have trouble breathing, and Scott tells everyone that it might be because the life support system is having problems. Finding Dr. Brody and Dr. Park, he takes them to help Dr. Rush with the life support.
On Icarus, Rush is trying to figure out why the address won’t connect. Eli suggests that it might be the wrong address, which Rush rejects. Young comes and pulls Eli away for dinner, leaving Rush annoyed. During dinner, the base gets attacked. The soldiers of the base move to defend it. The flashback ends, showing a group of soldiers running through the corridors, ending up in the control room.
Rush is about to reset the life support system, but Eli says that it might overload the system, blowing up the ship. Greer raises his weapon, threatening to shoot him if he presses the button to reset it. Another flashback starts, showing Greer being released from confinement on Icarus Base. It turns out that the Lucian Alliance that is attacking, and they’re going to overwhelm the base. On the ship, Rush says that he is going to press the button. Scott orders Greer to lower his weapon. After a moment, he complies, and Rush resets the system. Nothing happens.
The base defense begins, but the Death Gliders are doing some serious damage to the base. The weapons fire is causing the core to start overloading. Rush wants to attempt one last dialing of the nine-chevron address. Eli convinces him that it can’t be the power, it has to be the gate address, like a code. Cancelling the dialing to Earth, Rush begins dialing the nine-chevron address. This time the last chevron locks, establishing a wormhole. Rush justifies it to Young, saying that any blast could translate through an open wormhole. On the ship, Rush is messing with the computer and pulls up a star map. They find out that the ship has been traveling for centuries, visiting dozens of galaxies. They’re millions of light years from home.
Young orders Scott to lead the evacuation team. Once in the Gate Room, Scott tells them to follow him on a three-count, then heads through the gate. Everyone beings evacuating behind him, not knowing the destination. Back in the hall, Young attempts to blow a hole through a collapsed hall, and succeeds. Pulling out Senator Armstrong, they head for the gate. Young orders Greer to take the Senator through, and starts looking through cases for something. Finding it, the runs toward the gate as the room explodes around him. The explosion picks him up and hurls him through the gate, and the planet explodes as the core goes critical.
Back on Earth, Col. Carter calls to General O’Neill telling that they managed to get most of the people on the surface off before the planet blew. She asks how many people made it though the gate to Earth. When O’Neill says that no one came through to Earth, they both wonder where they all went.
Episode Review:
From the very beginning of the episode, it’s clear that Stargate Universe is not at all like SG-1 or Atlantis. Right from the start, it’s a lot more story-based than its predecessors. But even with its differences, it still has the Stargate feel. Overall, Air (Part 1) is a great episode. There’s pretty solid acting, an interesting story, and a nice hook that makes you want to keep watching. Best of all, it has a good hook for getting new watchers into the franchise, which is always a great thing. As long as the writers can keep up the story, SGU will turn out to be a great series.
Michael Shanks gets to showcase his acting chops more in the second part, where he has a bigger role. This part also sets the stage well for the rest of the series. It gives a foreshadowing of the scope of the Goa’uld Empire, as well as a inkling of the quest to find both Sha’re and Skaara. But personally, the best part was watching the larval Goa’uld burrow in to Kawalsky. You know that it’s probably not going to end well later, and you want to jump up and scream at SG-1 to check him out, just to avoid the inevitable take-over. All in all, a great episode!
Kai_Strifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02832710883421340687noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-988241928666531285.post-31155597535157374142011-02-21T11:38:00.000-08:002011-02-21T11:38:14.013-08:00Day 17 - Star Trek (Part 2): Enterprise Season 2
- ENTERPRISE -

OFFICIAL (Amazon.com) SYNOPSIS:

With Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) trapped in the 31st century, season 2 of Enterprise opens with a rousing resolution to season 1's cliffhanger finale. The first four episodes instantly became fan favorites: "Shockwave, Part II" advances the Suliban's role in the Temporal Cold War; "Carbon Creek" reveals the real first contact (albeit a secret one) between humans and Vulcans in Pennsylvania in 1957, allowing Jolene Blalock to play T'Pol's "second foremother" in a Sputnik-era scenario; in "Minefield," Reed (Dominick Keating) is nearly killed by an explosive device attached to Enterprise's hull; the damage is repaired in "Dead Stop," featuring award-winning digital modeling effects as the disabledEnterprise encounters a mysterious automated space station. Season 2 also emphasizes Archer's ongoing friction with the Vulcan High Command, exacerbated when T'Pol's career is threatened (in "Stigma") by her involuntary involvement with ostracized mind-melders. Connections to the original Star Trek (series and films) continue with episodes involving Tellarites, Tholians, Klingons, Andorians, and even a brief appearance by a Tribble (one of many occasions for humor in Dr. Phlox's sickbay, the setting of many of the season's finest dialogue-driven scenes). Early warp-drive history is also explored in "First Flight," a Right Stuff-like episode guest-starring Keith Carradine as Archer's friend and rival in breaking the Warp 2 barrier.
Consisting primarily of stand-alone episodes that integrate ongoing story arcs, season 2 showcases the primary cast with generally good results: Mayweather (Anthony Montgomery) visits the "boomer" cargo ship he was raised on in "Horizon"; Hoshi (Linda Park) experiences unsettling transporter symptoms in "Vanishing Point"; and Tucker (Connor Trineer) plays a pivotal role in several episodes, notably "Dawn," "Precious Cargo" and "Cogenitor." And while "Regeneration" provoked controversy among fans for introducing the yet unnamed Borg in an early Starfleet context, it's a fine episode (with echoes of The Thing) that holds up to scrutiny, while others (including "The Crossing," "The Breach" and "Cogenitor") feel somewhat recycled, indicating the challenge of finding new ideas in the Star Trek canon. Overall, however, season 2 is consistently strong, with several episodes directed by cast alumni from previous Trek series, including NextGen's LeVar Burton, and Voyager's Roxanne Dawson and Robert Duncan McNeill. They all lead up to a devastating attack on Earth (with seven million casualties, including Trip's younger sister) in "The Expanse," ending the season with high-stakes mystery as Enterprise enters a treacherous region of space in search of the Xindi, an enemy race that factors heavily in season 3.
Abundant bonus features include a generous selection of deleted scenes (non-essential, but interesting to fans); audio commentary (on "Dead Stop" and "Regeneration") by writers Mike Sussman and Phyllis Strong, who explain the challenge of writing under constantly shifting production conditions; and text commentary (on "Stigma" and "First Flight"), in which Trek veterans Michael and Denise Okuda demonstrate their encyclopedic knowledge of Star Trek fact and fiction. Six Easter eggs, known as "NX-01 Files," are hidden on the Special Features menus; they offer brief glimpses into specific aspects of production, including set recycling and art direction. "Enterprise" secrets are revealed for those who pay meticulous attention to detail; "Inside 'A Night in Sickbay'" offers a behind-the-scenes assessment of that memorable episode; and "LeVar Burton: Star Trek Director" celebrates the actor's smooth transition to directing after his stint on Next Generation. "Enterprise Profile: Jolene Blalock" is a tribute to the sexy actress by her fellow cast members and executive producers Brannon Braga and Rick Berman, including Blalock's assessment of T'Pol's pivotal role as Enterprise's resident Vulcan. Best of all, however, are the hilarious outtakes: They show the cast as a family unit, combining hard work with humor as the second season progresses. --Jeff Shannon
REVIEW:
The second season continues the rather fast paced story that begun in the final few episodes of Season 1, where Archer discovers that Crewman Daniels is actually a time agent from Starfleet in the 31st century. As aggressions with the Suliban (A reptilian race) rise to a breaking point and Daniels pulls Captain Archer into the 31st century, believing that keeping him safe there will save their future, but in fact ends up destroying his entire civilization in an instant.
This season marks the ending of the Suliban story line and the beginning of the season and a half long war with the Xindi. Season 2 is actually one of the best one's that Enterprise has to offer, especially when Archer is stuck in the 31st century because there are a lot of little easter eggs for long time viewers like "What's this Romulan Star Empire?" and Daniels answers "Oh it's... nothing important."

And like most things in Star Trek... "This is just the beginning..."

She's grabbed, and a firefight ensues. The Airmen take out a few of the assailants, but in the end are no match for them. One manages to sound the alarm and the base goes into lock down. By the time the strike team gets to the gate room, the gate's already been dialed and the remaining attackers leave, taking the female Airman with them.

The Air Force sends some men to retrieve Col. When he answers that he did, Hammond reveals that they are going to send another nuke through. Jack is forced to admit that while his team did detonate the weapon, they detonated it aboard Ra's ship and they faked that gate on the other side had been buried.

Hammond decides to send the bomb through anyway, and locks Jack in the brig. After sitting for a while, Hammond comes back and tells Jack he's considering any other options. Jack asks to take a team through the gate, which Hammond agrees to. He sends a message to Daniel and after he receives a reply, they put a team together. In addition to Kawalsky and Ferretti, Captain Samantha Carter, an astrophysicist, also joins the team. When they leave, they're told that they have 24 hours to return or send a message.

But immediately Daniel Jackson calms them, telling them to lower their weapons. Everyone is reunited, and introductions are gotten out the way. When Daniel asks why they returned, Jack reveals the attack on Earth. Daniel tells Jack that they couldn't have come from Abydos, but they thinks he might have an idea where they may have come from. They have to wait for a sandstorm to pass.

While they wait, Daniel tells Jack that they attackers must have come through another gate. But according to Daniel, they didn't have a critical component. He takes them to a room with a ton of writing on the walls. It turns out that map of a huge Stargate network. Sam initially says that it couldn't be possible, until Daniel suggests that the gates could've drifted apart. She realized that would account for the addresses not working, and says that, using the map as a basis, she could set up an equation that could account for the shift. While staring around the room at the huge amount of addresses, she remarks "The aliens could've come from anywhere..."

While they are off looking at the map, the gate activates, and the same attackers from before come though. They take Sha're and Skaara and leave just before Jack and the rest of the team show up. When Jack and the team go back to Earth, they bring Daniel with him. For those who has watched the movie Stargate, the change from Kurt Russell to Richard Dean Anderson and from James Spader to Michael Shanks might have thrown a few people off. Personally, I prefer Richard Dean Anderson's more sarcastic nature to Kurt Russell's very rough and tough persona. And Michael Shanks does an amazing job of giving off the vibe of Daniel Jackson. All in all, this was a good episode, and a great start for an amazing series.

Bigpoint, in association with SyFy and NBC Universal, has been working on an online MMO called Battlestar Galactica Online. Battlestar Galactica Online (BGO) is set just after Season 2, Episode 11 and 12, where Galactica and Pegasus destroy the Cylon Resurrection Ship. According to the story of BGO, the Cylons retaliate soon after for the lost of their ship. But when the Colonial Fleet tries to jump away, something goes wrong. Both the Colonial and Cylon fleet are hit with a massive energy pulse that overloads their FTL drives and triggers an uncontrolled jump that throws them way off course.

Here starts the main story of BGO. One the game site, Bigpoint gives this description:

In Battlestar Galactic Online, both the Colonial and Cylon fleets find themselves stranded in an unexplored area of space at the very edge of one of the galactic arms. Heavily damaged and critically low on resources, both fleets race against time to repair and rearm, struggling for control of systems rich in Tylium, metals and water. The Colonial fleet desperately searches for a way to escape and continue the search for Earth before the Cylons gain enough strength to destroy them once and for all.

Even though BGO is just a beta at the moment, I'll give a short review of it in its current state. When it goes to its actual release, I'll review it again with any additions they've made.

Note: This review is done from the human side of the game. You can play as a Cylon, and I will be reviewing that side of game later.

Review

Gameplay/Presentation 7/10 - The gameplay of BGO is pretty well executed, especially for a solely online MMO with no downloaded client. The game starts you off with a brief tutorial that teaches you how to fly your Viper Mk II, how to attack, and few other basic skills. When the tutorial ends, you can get more training by going and getting missions from Admiral Adama, or you can jump straight into the main game. The main story of the game involved jumping to systems, preferable with a fleet of other player ships, and establishing an outpost in that system. This can be easy if the Cylons don't have an outpost ship in that system. But if they do, massive, multi-ship PvP battles tend to take place, with spectacular results.
If you don't want to jump straight into helping with the raid fleets, you can take little assignments from Apollo and Starbuck. These are usually mining, drone killing, and recon missions, great for getting a little extra money and experience. Hopefully when the release copy of the game comes out, they will have a few more missions. When they do, BGO will definitely get a higher score here.

Graphics/Sound 9/10 - If you run BGO at full graphics over a good internet connections, the graphics of the star systems look amazing. The ship textures are extremely well done and the textures for the asteroids, planets and other various in-system objects look great. Even when you have to turn the graphics down, the game still looks good. The soundtrack of the game is even better. Some of the music is from the show, and the music that isn't from the show is clearly related to the music from the show. But it's not just the music that is stellar, is also the sound effects. The explosions, gun and missile sounds, engine noise are all extremely well done. They sound similar to the show, without being a direct rip from BSG.

Story 7/10 - Here's where the game is lacking a little bit. While there is an over-arching story to the entire game, there are not a lot of side missions and side stories to explore. Mostly, the story revolves around trying to take more systems than the Cylons. But what happens if the humans push them all the way back to their Basestar. Does the game end? Will Galactica jump out from behind the nebula finally? We may never know, but hopefully the developers have considered these, and other burning questions that the beta testers have had.

Overall Verdict 8/10

This game has huge potential, and since it's just hitting open beta, it has plenty of time to work out any hiccups that may pop up. To the developers, I just have to say keep up the great work on the game. I'm look forward to flying my Viper around the world of BGO for many months to come.

Kai_Strife

Image Sources:
http://windows7themes.net
http://www.mmogamesite.com
http://us1.battlestar-galactica.bigpoint.com
Kai_Strifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02832710883421340687noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-988241928666531285.post-71945077950312802732011-02-09T18:04:00.002-08:002011-02-09T18:05:59.080-08:00Blog Update 09Hey everyone!

Let me start off by saying Kurt Russell is no Richard Dean Anderson. ;) In all honesty, the original Stargate motion picture was not what caught my attention and lured me to the Stargate franchise. It was the sarcastic wit and humor of Colonel O’Neill in SG-1, and the charisma between that SG-1 team that first won me over. I didn’t grow an attachment to anyone in the original Stargate movie. Okay, I take that back, James Spader did an awesome job as Dr. Daniel Jackson and thus was the only character in the film that I felt any connection to.

The movie starts off showing Ra arriving on earth and presumably capturing a human boy. The movie jumps to 1928 Egypt where Professor Langford and his daughter, Catherine, at the dig site during the uncovering of the physical Stargate. The movie then jumps to modern day with Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader) giving a lecture. His audience soon disappears as he shares his view that the Egyptians did not build the pyramids. Little does he know that Catherine Langford is present and has being following up on him. She gives him travel plans and tells him this is his chance to prove his research. Having just lost his apartment, he has nothing to lose.

We see the distress and sadness in his home and learn of his son’s accidental death while playing with Colonel O’Neil’s gun. Langford, Jackson and O’Neil all meet up at a secured military base where Jackson figures out in days what the research team has been working on for two years. He recognizes that the symbols on the Stargate’s cover stone are constellations and act as coordinates for another planet. Jackson quickly volunteers to go on the mission by stating he is sure he will be able to get them home.

Yes, I am very sensitive to movies and am known to have an increased heart rate during any movie or scene that I consider chilling or unearthly. I remember being in the theater watching the first trip through the stargate. What a ride! For that time the effects were great and during those seconds of twisting and turning, I was extremely eager to see what was waiting for them on the other side. This scene is my favorite in the movie because it gave me that unknown extraterrestrial feel, which made me excited and fearful at the same time. Later on, I was pleased to see this wormhole journey carried over into the series.

It was like watching a nerd being picked on by the football team in high school, as the military off-world team yelled at him and even threw his bag, resulting in his books being scattered in the sand. All this because they do not understand that he cannot automatically dial the gate back to earth. He tries explaining that he needs to look around for any markings that will help him figure out the coordinates, but this falls upon deaf ears. The tone soon changes when Dr. Jackson goes to pet a local domesticated beast, gets his foot tangled in the animal’s reigns and goes for an unexpected drag through the desert. Don’t worry, O’Neil and a couple other team members are close behind and they all end up on a dune overlooking the local humans mining for mineral.

The necklace is inscribed with Ra’s symbol and the people of the distant planet think that their God, Ra, sent them. While visiting with the villagers, they learn that Ra has outlawed reading and writing in fear that the people of this world will rise up against him. During the evening Daniel spends some time with Sha’uri, and unknowingly becomes married to her. She takes him to where their history is written on the walls of caves and teaches him to speak the language. Being a linguist, he catches on quickly. It is here that we learn Ra is portrayed as an actual alien. The human host’s body is possessed by Ra, an average looking grey alien that we all are used to seeing in Area 51 type photos. Ra is the last of his kind and chooses a human host because the human body is easy for him to repair. This is a notable difference between the movie and the Stargate series. This obviously was changed later on with the SG-1 series where Ra and the other false gods are easiest described as evil parasitic snakes called the Goa’uld.

Ra’s men then kill more team members as they enter the pyramid and capture O’Neil and Jackson. This is also where Ra confronts them with the bomb that Jack O’Neil brought to the planet to detonate in case there is any threat to earth. Ra tells Dr. Jackson that he has to kill his teammates in front of the villagers to prove that Ra is their true god.

Sha’uri tells the children their history and why they no longer can continue on as slaves. An uprising is formed and during the assembled called together by Ra, where Dr. Jackson is suppose to kill O’Neil and his team, the villagers fight back and save the day. In my experience, the most remembered scene in the movie takes place during this battle. Just about every time I mention this movie to someone, they bring up the scene where one of the local boys is killed while running down the pyramid’s inclined plane.

Unlike the TV series, I didn't become attached to Colonel Jack O’Neil’s character. He was rough, and not just around the edges. The few times we were able to see a closer look at him, we saw the pain that he is still experiencing from his son’s death. He didn’t mind letting a child in the village try out smoking for the first time and even gave the boy his lighter as a gift, but as soon as the boy reach out to handle his gun, O’Neil’s fear exploded and scared the boy away. By the end of the movie, there was a sense that O’Neil had softened a little – just a tiny bit. Okay, who am I kidding?

Besides the threat of Ra being eliminated, the end was left wide open. With Dr. Jackson choosing to stay on the planet and live with his new wife it seemed he had finally found a place where he fit in and belonged. How does Dr. Jackson’s life unfold on the planet? The film ended with the rest of the team walking through the stargate headed for home. What happens back on earth? What does O’Neil tell the military about the planet they visited and their trip? Maybe frequent visits between the two planets are in store? If you’ve seen this movie and for some reason have never started watching the TV series, be sure to start watching Stargate SG-1 to see how the story continues and unfolds during ten seasons of awesomeness.

It ranges from incredibly primitive to unbelievably advanced. Today, let's take a look at some of the more common technology from Stargate SG-1. We'll start with the most well known piece of technology, the Stargate.

Stargate

The Stargate is a ring-shaped device that can create an artificial wormhole linking two points in space, specifically two Stargates. The wormhole allows for near-instantaneous travel between the points. The Ancients, who created the gates, are often called the Gate Builders, because the Stargates are often considered their greatest creation. It's the central piece of technology to the entire series, like an always looming protector.

Tau'ri Technology

The technology of the Tau'ri, or the Earthlings, is at the level of 20th century Earth. Everything that is designed and built on Earth reflects the technological level of the late '90s. As the series advanced, Earth obtained more advanced technology, but within "realistic" limits. While some of the technology the Tau'ri obtain comes from good ole human ingenuity, a good deal comes from upgrades performed by the Asgard and from information gleaned from the Ancient database and from outposts around the galaxy.

Ancient Technology

Ancient technology is the most advanced in the universe, as far as anyone can determine. In their travels, SG-1 has not found anyone with technology that surpasses the Ancients in every facet. At their civilization's height, they were unmatched in science, technology and military might. While some civilizations have come close to their level of advancement (The Asgard), no one has yet surpassed them. In fact, due to the fact that the Ancients ascended to another plane of existence, no one even knows the full extent of their capabilities and research.

Goa'uld Technology

While more advanced than the Tau'ri, it is considerably inferior to both the Ancients and the Asgard. Goa'uld technology is mostly an amalgamation of technology from the various species and worlds they have conquered over the centuries.

Those are the three main technological groups present in Stargate SG-1. There are a few more, such as the Asgard and the Nox, but they will be talked about as they appear in the show. Since this is the last installment of "Stargate SG-1: The Basics", we will be starting the reviews of the series shortly. Look forward to that soon!
Kai_Strifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02832710883421340687noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-988241928666531285.post-30576626953226078062011-01-23T07:15:00.000-08:002011-02-05T12:34:41.609-08:00Stargate SG-1: The Basics (Part 2) - [Updated 2-5-2011]Today in Part 2, I'm going to outline the three main factions that SG-1 encounters and is forced to fight throughout the series. The series starts with the fight against the Goa'uld System Lords and their slaves, the Jaffa. Toward the end of the System Loads reign, they encounter the Replicators that have been fighting against the Asgard for years. Last, the Ori enter the picture, attempting to use their advanced technology and knowledge to trick the galaxy into worshiping them.

Goa'uld

The Goa'uld are a serpent-shaped parasite that possesses a human host to survive. The resulting combination is an exceptionally strong creature with enhanced strength and extreme longevity (when paired with their resurrection device, the Sarcophagus). They use this and their advanced technology to set themselves up as gods. Taking humans from Earth thousands of years ago, they spread them throughout the galaxy and began to rule over them as various gods from human mythology. Notable Goa'uld System Lords include Apophis, Anubis, Hathor, and Sokar.

Jaffa

The Jaffa are the slaves of the Goa'uld. They are descendants of humans that have been modified to that they have to serve as an living incubator for larval Goa'uld. Without a larval Goa'uld, the Jaffa will die soon after hitting puberty due to a failing immune system. In fact, if the symbiote is removed from an adult Jaffa, they will die a slow, painful death within a matter of hours. They must either acquire a new symbiote, or they require regular injections of a drug developed by the Tok'ra, called tretonin. The Jaffa often where armor with a helmet resembling the a specific animal. For instance, all of Apophis' Jaffa wore helmets resembling serpents.

Because of the reappearance of SG-1 and the Tau'ri in the galaxy, may Jaffa are realizing that the Goa'uld are not the gods they thought them to be and are rebelling against them. These actions aid SG-1 and the people of Earth as they try to bring down the System Lords.

Replicators

The Replicators are mechanical beings composed of nanotechnology. Their main goal is to increase their numbers and spread across the universe by assimilating the advanced technology of other species. For this reason, the Replicators are opposed to all other life-forms. They started out as an arachnid-type androids, but in "Unnatural Selection", they developed human-form Replicators. Normal Replicators are resistant to energy weapons, like the Jaffa staff weapon, but can be broken apart and destroyed by projectile weapons. However, human Replicators are resistant to both types of weapons because they're make up of smaller blocks that resemble cells. They were eventually completely destroyed by the Dakara Superweapon in Season 8.

Ori

The Ori are a group of Ascending beings who are incredibly similar to the Ancients. They use their ascended powers and infinite knowledge of the universe to force other lesser beings to worship them. The Ori differ from the Ancients in one key way, their life view. The Ancients value science while the Ori value religion. They created a fake religion known as "Origin" to sway beings to worshipping them. Origin is designed to channel the energy created by the human worshippers to the Ori. So, while they promise Ascension to their followers, they won't acually help other Ascend because they would have to share the energy they sap.

All their technology is designed and targeted to help get more followers to sap more energy from. Since the Ori are Ascended, they don't directly interfere on the physical plane. They instead recruit humans called Priors to spread their word. They artifically evolve the Priors to be one step from Ascension in order to give them special powers. Because of the number of followers the Ori have, they are nearly unstoppable.

Stargate SG-1 has had the perfect villians since it was concieved. Starting with Ra, the writers continued to come up with great storylines and great enemies that kept SG-1 on their toes, and us on the edge of our seats. That's it for part 2, part 3 on the basic technology of Stargate will be posted tomorrow afternoon. Soon after, we'll be starting on the reviews of the series, starting with the extended cut of "Children of the Gods". Till next time, stay classy!
We’ll take a brief look at the main characters, the main enemies, a few of the allies, and the main technology and mythology of the series.

Summary

Stargate SG-1 takes place about 2 years after the events of the movie Stargate. It follows the adventures of the main team sent out from Earth to explore the Stargate network, SG-1. In addition to SG-1, there are about 2 dozen other teams that explore various planets through the Stargates, looking for allies and technology to defend against several enemies, first the Goa’uld, then the Replicators and later the Ori.

Main Characters

The main characters of Stargate SG-1 are the members of the SG-1 team, along with a few other people.

Jack O’Neill – Jack is the leader of the SG-1 team for seasons 1-7 of the series. He was on the original mission to go through the Stargate in the movie Stargate and comes out of retirement to help counter the Goa’uld threat. After being promoted to Brigadier General in Season 8, O’Neill takes command of Stargate Command (SGC) and, after a brief stint in Washington in Season 9 (and being promoted to Major General), he returns and maintains command of SGC through both Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe (where he receives his promotion to Lieutenant General).
D in theoretical astrophysics. Before the start of SGC, she had spent years at the Pentagon trying to get the Stargate working. After the discovery of the Abydos cartouche, which contained the locations of all Goa’uld known Stargates, Captain Carter was responsible for the algorithm that corrected the addresses for stellar drift. In Season 2, she is briefly taken by the Tok’ra Jolinar, after which she retains many memories and has the ability to control Goa’uld technology, a major advantage for SG-1. She is promoted to Major in Season 3, and then to Lieutenant Colonel in Season 8 when O’Neill is promoted to Brigadier General, and assumes command of SG-1. Sam briefly leaves SG-1 in Season 9, but rejoins in Episode 7 to help counter the Ori threat.
